Westbury Lion Geoff Curtis crowned Community Champion

Lion Geoff Curtis, a dedicated member of the Westbury Lions Club, has been recognised for his extensive contributions to the local community, earning him the prestigious title of Person of the Year from the White Horse News.

On receiving the award, Geoff said, “This is such a surprise; I’m just one of the Lions, and the work we do in the community is very much a team effort.”

His nominator highlighted his many contributions to the community which earned him the title this year, which included:

  • Leadership in the Lions Club: Geoff has served two terms as president, leading impactful projects such as the Donkey Derby, Santa Float, and supporting trips to Marwell Zoo, all of which benefit young people in the community.
  • Championing the Leos Club: As District Officer for Leos, Geoff has actively encouraged other clubs to establish Leos branches across the South and South West, following the successful relaunch of Westbury Leos. In doing so for Westbury, he has opened membership to children from across the community, fostering a positive image of these hardworking young members.
  • Support for Westbury Guides and Rangers: Geoff has been a constant source of support for the Guides and Rangers, where his wife Christine and daughters are leaders. He has contributed by teaching crafts and skills, assisting with trips, and managing tasks like cooking and tent setup.
  • Youth Engagement through Angling: Geoff’s involvement with Warminster Angling Club and the Gudgeons Club emphasizes teaching responsible fishing practices to young people.
  • Westbury Junior School: Through his work as handyman and caretaker, Geoff is a friendly and supportive presence for the youngsters at the school, well known for warmly greeting children every morning with a high five and helping those who may be feeling unwell or anxious to get across the line with a positive step.
